EDO PDP ANTI OPEN GRAZING BILL.
In the last few weeks, we have been seeking the position of Edo state government as it concerns herdsmen and farmers clashes across the state. EDSG has consistently and stubbornly refused to answer the very important question.
In the face of the dangers faced by our farmers, EDSG announced a ban on night grazing, a policy many stakeholders condemned as inadequate, unimplementable and cosmetic.
After several meetings with stakeholders, It has become imperative that Edo PDP make its position clear, unequivocal and unambiguous. Consequently, Edo PDP has prepared and presented a bill on the prohibition of open grazing to the Edo State House Assembly for consideration and passage into law.
The law will prevent the destruction of farms and farm produce as well as protect lives and properties of farmers, their wives and children occasioned by open grazing.
The law will also protect the environment from degradation and pollution caused by open rearing and overgrazing of livestock.”
It will also optimize the use of land resources in the face of overstretched land and increasing population, as well as safeguard our food security arrangement.
The law would encourage the establishment of ranches with the permission and approval of the state government.
In preparation of the bill, EDO PDP researched its effectiveness on states that has enacted similar laws. The research enabled us to get first-hand information on the processes that culminated into the law and the way it was being implemented.
The ultimate goal is to restore permanent peace in Edo State. We have conferred with critical stakeholders in Edo State and believe that we are on the same page on the quest for peace.
We urged the government, journalists and the civil society to support the move.
