Early results from the Local Government election held today in Ogun State show that the Action Congress of Nigeria is coasting home to victory in some of the units monitored by P.M. NEWS, although in several places the votes were too close between it and the opposition PDP.
On its part, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not impressed by the ACN victory and has described the election as sham. The party complained about some irregularities.
ACN loyalists who monitored the results were seen jubilating in some polling units. In two of the units located at the Unity Secondary School, Abeokuta North, the ACN led in the first unit with its chairmanship candidate polling 53 against the PDP’s 35.
For the councillorship seat in the unit, while the ACN scored 43, the PDP candidate scored 40.
Also at the second unit, while the PDP had a total of 35 votes for its chairmanship position, the ACN had 56. For the councillorship seat, the PDP scored 47 while the ACN had 49.
As at the time of this report, officials of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) were gathered at the Unity Secondary School for the collation of the final result in the Local Government.
The chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in the State, Mr Ireti Oniyide, has described the election as a sham complaining that there were malpractices such as overnight voting and disqualification of PDP candidates.
But the State Governor, Mr. Ibikunle Amosun, has denied the allegation even as he confirmed the low turn-out.
Results from Ado-Odo Ota local government area also followed the trend in Abeokuta, with the ACN leading.
The party defeated the major contestant, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by wide margin, though the polls witnessed mass apathy.
Results gotten from wards and various polling units showed clearly that the ACN ran away with landslide victory to further compound the woes of the PDP in Ogun State.
In Ward II, the ACN won 12 out of the 13 polling units in both the chairmanship and councillorship positions.
At Sayan Methodist polling unit, the ACN polled 80 votes as against 24 by the PDP in the chairmanship election.
At polling unit 013, the ACN polled 77 as against 41 by the PDP for the chairmanship position.
At Iganmode unit, the ACN scored 60, PDP, 6; At Afobaje unit 2, ACN polled 60 as against 12 polled by the PDP for the chairmanship seat.
