Chairman of the Editorial Board, Vanguard Newspapers, Ikeddy Isiguzo was Thursday named as head of a panel that will co-ordinate the annual Nigerian Sports Award which is making a big come-back after it was last held in 2003.
The panel also include veteran sports journalist and broadcaster, Fabio Olanipekun, General Manager of Multichoice Nigeria, Felix Awogu, former Nigeria quarter miler, Falilat Ogunkoya and the Managing Director of Masterssports International, Ejiro Omonode.
Others are Chairman of theLagosStatechapter of the Sports Writers Association, Fred Edore, Tunde Dekunle and Kayode Idowu of Unmissable Incentive Limited, who will serve as the secretary of the panel. The 2012 Nigerian Sports Awards ceremony has been fixed for 29 November at the Federal Palace Hotel,Lagos.
In a media briefing to unveil the awards inLagosThursday, Kayode Idowu said the awards which will be in 16 categories cover all sports, including athletics, soccer, combat sports, special sports, schools sports and sports journalist of the year in both print and electronic categories.
Speaking on the essence of the awards, chairman of the awards panel informed that “the Nigerian Sports Awards was is aimed at motivating our athletes to lift their standards,” adding, “people must meet the criteria to be able to win. If not, nobody gets it because you cannot reward non-performance.”
Members of the public will have inputs in the process of selecting winners through nomination and voting athletes of their choice. The panel will then sit and reconcile the public vote with other criteria before announcing winners.
